For the Dumplings
  • 2 large apples, peeled and cored Use firm apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for best results.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Gluten-free option: use a 1:1 gluten-free flour mix.
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened Use salted butter with reduced salt if preferred.
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt Reduce to 1/4 teaspoon if using salted butter.
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup milk For a vegan version, use almond milk.
For the Sauce
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon.
  3. In another bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Gradually add the dry mixture to the creamed mixture, then mix in the milk until a soft dough forms.
  5. Roll the dough out to about 1/4-inch thickness and cut into squares.
  6. Wrap the cored apples in the dough squares, sealing them tightly.
Baking
  1. Arrange the wrapped apples in a greased baking dish.
  2. In a saucepan, combine brown sugar, water, and vanilla extract. Bring to a boil and pour over dumplings.
  3. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
Serving
  1. Serve warm, drizzled with the sauce from the baking dish.
  2. Optional: Top with vanilla ice cream for extra delight.
