Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and brown sugar together until it’s light and fluffy, about 2–3 minutes.
- Add the beaten egg and vanilla extract to the butter-sugar mixture. Mix until fully combined and smooth.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until a soft dough forms.
- Fold in walnuts (if using).
- On a lightly floured surface, divide the dough into three 10x1-inch rolls.
- Wrap each roll tightly in waxed paper and freeze for at least 12 hours.
- Slice the frozen dough into ⅜-inch rounds. Place them on greased baking sheets.
- Bake for 6–8 minutes until the edges are set.
- Allow the cookies to cool on a wire rack before serving.
